Inside APAC’s Surging Stablecoin & Cash-on-Chain Landscape

During Korea Blockchain Week 2025, Intertangible’s Una Softic moderated a deep-dive panel dissecting the future of programmable money across the Asia-Pacific region. Featuring industry leaders Naoto Shimoda (SMFG), Fernando Vazquez (Chainlink Labs), Taishi Sato (DeFimans / SBI Group), and Tony McLaughlin (Ubyx Inc), the session tackled the ongoing debate: will bank-issued stablecoins, tokenized deposits, or private stablecoins dominate institutional finance?

The Shift: From Bank Accounts to Wallets

For corporate treasuries managing global operations (e.g., conglomerates like Hyundai), cash management historically required maintaining thousands of individual bank accounts—isolated database entries inside proprietary bank ledgers.

The shift to public ledgers completely changes corporate treasury design:

  • Account Consolidation: Corporations are evaluating replacing hundreds of subsidiary bank accounts with centralized multi-sig wallets, lowering FX drag and internal wire delays.
  • Tokenized Money vs. Tokenized Deposits: While tokenized deposits require deep, costly integration into legacy core banking architectures, stablecoins provide a faster time-to-market and broader cross-institutional interoperability outside closed banking KYC boundaries.
  • Yield-Driven Demand: In markets like Japan, where domestic bank deposit rates sit near ~0.2% while inflation hovers near 3%, corporate demand is pivoting toward yield-bearing tokenized Money Market Funds (MMFs) and collateralized stablecoin rails over standard cash accounts.

Navigating Regional Regulatory Hurdles

Japan pioneered formal stablecoin legislation in June 2023, yet challenges remain. Foreign stablecoin issuers faces strict “double-reserve” mandates, requiring local trust bank collateralization even if the asset is fully backed offshore.

To unlock global liquidity, infrastructure protocols like Chainlink are deploying Proof of Reserve (PoR) and automated mint-checking to verify backing on-chain in real time, easing regulatory friction for cross-border adoption.

What Lies Ahead for APAC

  • Corporate Treasury Adoption: High-volume intercompany settlements will migrate off legacy SWIFT/ACH rails to 24/7 on-chain settlement rails.
  • TradFi-DeFi Convergence: Tokenized real-world assets and MMFs will increasingly serve as collateral within compliant DeFi protocols to borrow instant liquidity.
  • Weekend FX Arbitrage: 24/7 programmable FX trading will eliminate weekend liquidity gaps inherent to traditional foreign exchange markets.

The Intertangible Takeaway

Whether denominated in USD or local currencies like JPY, tokens on public networks represent the inevitable evolution of transaction banking. Intertangible remains dedicated to shaping the strategy, infrastructure, and policy required to move global liquidity on-chain.
